Energy and Climate Change
Sustainable, affordable and secure energy is the linchpin of a thriving economy and high consumer welfare. Global energy demand is expected to at least double by 2050 while the depletion of fossil energy sources continues. Symptoms of demand-supply imbalances are already being felt: oil and gas prices have more than tripled since the year 2000. Running parallel to this trend, global temperatures are rising, which - according to the overwhelming majority of scientists - is due to rising concentrations of heat-trapping greenhouse gases in the atmosphere caused by our rapid exploitation of fossil fuels. It is thus clear that both energy and climate change policy will be among the most consequential global issues of the coming century.
Economic growth is driving an increase in energy demand and greater pressure on natural resources and the quality of the environment. That economic development should follow the principles of sustainability is widely accepted; but how can we translate this concept into concrete solutions? An integrated approach comprising economic, institutional and technical perspectives is vital. Important drivers are:
- Liberalisation of the Turkish electricity and gas market
- Renewable energy and energy efficiency is become more and more important in Turkey
- UNDP has a platform for climate change in Turkey, among others induced by GEF funding
- Turkey has become a signatory party to the Kyoto protocol as of August 2009
- Turkey’s energy demand is set to increase by 6% per year until 2020
- Energy market regulation and transport urgently need to be further developed

Experience
Main experience has been gained in Turkey and the EU. Main clients are regional development agencies, national governments, the European Union, European Ministries responsible for Development Co-operation, Economic Affairs and the Environment, large engineering firms and international financial institutions, such as the World Bank and GEF. In addition, the private sector is also targetted providing consultancy services for foreign and local investors into the Turkish energy sector. Recent projects include:
