Environment and Water Management

Sustainable use of water resources and preserving the quality of the environment has become central to the debate on economic growth, in Turkey and world wide. This requires policy makers and specialists to take an integrated approach to economic and social development with the aim to combine environmental and technical aspects, and institutional, legal, financial, spatial economic and communication components. They also face the major challenge of growing competition for water as the population increases, and the ever shrinking access to useable water due to climate changes and contamination. In regions where surface water and ground water are shared between countries such as in the Southeast of Turkey, another major challenge is dealing with trans-boundary issues on water supply and maintaining water quality.

Important issues relating to the environment and water in Turkey are:

  • Increasing environmental pollution due to fast economic development and population growth
  • Climate change and increasing greenhouse emissions and the fact that Turkey has become a signatory party to the Kyoto protocol as of August 2009.
  • Pollution of surface and ground waters in relation to the need for proper waste water treatment
  • Need for more efficiency in water consumption of agriculture, households and industry
  • Droughts in certain regions in Turkey and at the same time increasing flash floodings in other regions
  • Need for clean drinking water
  • Loss of biodiversity due to rapid urban development and tourism
  • Needs for integrated water management
